Puri To Wrap Thick Security Blanket | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Even as the Odisha Police makes the biggest-ever security arrangement for Rath Yatra on July 1, DGP Sunil Kumar Bansal has asked his personnel to remain alert to thwart any possible terror threat as Puri gears up to welcome a sea of devotees during the festival. Since the devotees were barred from taking part in the Rath Yatra for two years because of Covid, the police and the administration are expecting a record footfall of more than 10 lakh this time.
“The Jagannath Temple is listed among the high-risk shrines in India. It has been categorised as Class-A by the ministry of home affairs in terms of the threat perception. Since the Rath Yatra is one of the biggest crowd-pullers in the country, it always remains under the terror radar. But we are prepared to meet any exigency,” Bansal told TOI after fine-tuning the security bandobast in Puri.
Around 185 platoons of force and more than 1,000 officers have been put on security duty, in the biggest Rath deployment so far.
Bansal said the special operation group, special tactical unit, anti-terrorist squads, anti-sabotage check units and bomb disposal squads would be mobilised in and around the temple during the festival. The top cop, however, denied having received any specific intelligence input of threat from any subversive group. “Apart from crowd management, we will instill a feeling of service among our personnel and ask them to facilitate the smooth darshan of the deities for the devotees,” the DGP said.
