MADURAI: Demanding 1% reservation in all government and private jobs, rightful representation in differently-abled welfare boards in the state among other demands, members of the Madurai All District Deaf People Association staged a protest near the district collector’s office on Friday. Since they cannot raise their voices for sloganeering, the protesters blew whistles to highlight their demands.
Spokesperson of the association, Solomon told reporters that the members have been demanding for cluster houses since they are poor and the monthly pension of `1,000 is very meagre and they want it to be increased to `3,000 per month. They also demanded driving licences. “It is a 19-chartered demand for which the association is staging the protest. They want an exclusive officer in a differently abled department to look into their grievances,” he said. They have appealed to the district collector to facilitate them meet the chief minister with their demand. The collector assured them that the district administration will arrange it, Solomon said. The association has urged the district administration to appoint a sign language interpreter at the collector’s office.
