Bhubaneswar: An organised fruit market, to be housed in a three-storied building, will become operational at Unit-II here soon with Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) mayor Sulochana Das taking stock of the Rs 1.92 crore project during a review meeting on Monday.
BMC officials said 78 vendors have been allotted fruit stalls on lottery basis. The building can accommodate 78 fruit vendors. The market will provide comfort to shoppers and vendors as facilities have been created accordingly. The fruit hub’s maintenance will be done up by the BMC, including common area development.
“It has been designed in such a way that customers can view the varieties of fruits available on the top floor from the ground floor itself. The fruit complex has sufficient ventilation and passage for movement. Besides, basic amenities like drinking water and toilet, there is enough parking space,” said BMC deputy commissioner Pramod Prusty.
Apart from fruit stalls, there are air-conditioned storages to prevent fruits from getting rotten. This will also keep the periphery environment clean. Owing to lack of storage, often vendors are found to dump rotting fruits on the road.
The BMC said the fruit stalls will remain protected from heat and dust. There is space to dump garbage to keep the areas clean. “We also plan to leave the basement for parking as people, during festive seasons, are seen crowding the roadside stalls with their vehicles parked on the road,” a BMC officer said.
Gayadhar Swain, general secretary of Rajdhani Haata Byabsayi Sangha, said such fruit markets should be opened in at least five places in the city. “The dedicated fruit market should have been operational long ago as it was mooted in 2016. Anyhow, it is going to run very soon as vendors have been allotted their respective stalls,” said Swain.
